SmileCentric Introduces Yomi Robotic Implant Surgery in Carmel

Carmel practice is first in the Indianapolis area to offer FDA-cleared robotic guidance for dental implants

SmileCentric, a dental implant and cosmetic practice in Carmel, Indiana, became the first practice in the Indianapolis area to offer Yomi robotic-assisted implant surgery in 2022, bringing a level of placement precision to the region that was not previously available locally.

Yomi, developed by Neocis, is a robotic device for dental surgery cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for commercial use in the United States. The system guides implant placement using real-time haptic feedback that governs drill depth, orientation, and position throughout surgery. Unlike software-only planning tools, Yomi provides physical resistance that actively directs the surgeon’s instrumentation during the procedure, reducing the potential for placement deviation.

Dr. Louis Abukhalaf, DDS, lead dentist at SmileCentric, pursued advanced implant training at the Misch Implant Institute and the Kois Center before introducing Yomi to his practice. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Marquette University School of Dentistry, graduating with high honors, and holds an undergraduate degree in chemistry and biochemistry from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated with highest honors. He has also completed specialized surgical training in Brazil, with one-on-one mentorship from surgeons focused on complex implant cases, including Zygomatic implant procedures.

“Precise implant placement directly affects long-term outcomes, and Yomi gives us a level of intraoperative guidance that freehand techniques cannot match. Robot-assisted procedures have become the standard of care across many areas of medicine, and we added this system so patients in Carmel and the surrounding area would have access to the same level of precision.”

— Dr. Louis Abukhalaf, DDS, SmileCentric

The Yomi system integrates with 3D cone beam CT scans and YomiPlan software to map each patient’s bone anatomy before surgery begins. On the day of the procedure, the robot translates that surgical plan into feedback the surgeon can feel, hear, and see in real time. This approach supports flapless surgery in eligible cases, a less invasive technique associated with shorter recovery and reduced postoperative discomfort compared to traditional open-flap methods.

SmileCentric offers a full range of implant procedures at its Carmel location, including single-tooth replacements, All-on-Four full arch restorations, and solutions for patients with severe bone loss. The practice uses 3D digital imaging and cone beam CT scanning for all implant evaluations and accepts most major PPO dental insurance plans. Free implant consultations are available for qualifying new patients.
